On January 21, 2017, millions of people came together for marches to protest Trump and the GOP stated agenda that will eliminate Planned Parenthood, dissolve the Affordable Care Act, privatize Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid as well as public schools. They also stood up against racism and stood for workers rights, civil rights, and human rights for all. Never in history have we seen this extent of protest surrounding an inauguration. Many NYSUT members and retirees attended protests in Albany, New York City, or Washington DC.

In October, 2016 18 people from the RC 10 area took a cruise through the Panama Canal.

JOY BEARS WORKSHOP OCTOBER 26, 2016

Bears are decorated by volunteers

On October 26, members of Retiree Council 10 and other volunteers came together to decorate 24 Joy Bears that will be donated to those who are undergoing treatment for cancer. The event is coordinated by RC 10 Vice President Ann Cherney, and is held twice a year. It is just one of the ways that RC 10 members give back to the community at large. FALL LUNCHEON 2016

On October 6, 2016 RC 10 held its Fall Luncheon at Longfellows Restaurant in Saratoga. Dr. Don Levy, Director of the Siena College Political Research Institute, was the keynote speaker.

RC 10 TRIP TO CUBA JANUARY 2016

Transportation

Two groups of 24 RC 10 members traveled to Cuba at the end of January. We went to the island with a desire to see what Cuba is like before the restoration of diplomatic relations with the US changes the country, and we left with much, much more. Cuba is part of our childhood memories of current events…the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and now we were looking at these events from the other perspective. It made many of us ponder the role and impact of the USA in world political events. We saw a third world country that still uses horses as transportation and seems to  have stopped time in 1950, yet is desperately struggling to join the world in 2016. Tears welled when we met teachers who gave up their jobs to sell trinkets in the market so that they could make more money. The Cuban people openly welcomed us and freely shared their thoughts, their music, dance, and art with us. This trip was not a typical vacation tour, but rather an experience that touched our minds, souls, and hearts.
