The Social Security number will be removed from Medicare cards to help prevent fraud and combat identity theft.

All people with Medicare benefits will be issued a new, unique Medicare number, which contains a combination of numbers and uppercase letters. The new Medicare cards will be mailed to enrollees, with instructions to safely and securely destroy current Medicare cards and to keep the new Medicare number confidential. Issuance of the new number will not change benefits that people with Medicare receive.

Participants at the 2016 NYSUT RC 10 Pre-Retirement Seminar

On Saturday, November 4, a Pre-Retirement Seminar was held at NYSUT Headquarters for active teachers and SRPs within Election District 10. The seminar was hosted as a collaborative effort by Retiree Council 10 and Election District 10.

In 2018, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 2 percent cost-of-living (COLA) adjustment but much or all of that gain may go toward Medicare Part B premiums. Most enrollees who did not have an increase over the past two years because in 2016 there was no COLA, and jin 2017 it was a very low 0.3 percent. This year, with the increase, recipients will see an increase for Part B  grow from an average of $109 to $134. On Friday, December 15, the Congressional Conference Committee published their tax plan, with the vote taking place next week. AFT President Randi Weingarten said, "I didn't think it was possible, but the Republicans have managed to use their Conference Committee to make their tax bill even sweeter for the rich." Although the tax plan is not approved by the majority of taxpayers, our activism has worked to lessen some of the worst provisions in the original bill. What could be more important to an organization of retired educators than to encourage young people to enter our chosen profession? RC 10 has always thought this was an important effort to make. Since 2008 we have offered high school seniors who are considering a career in education the opportunity to win a scholarship. RC 10 offers a $1,000 scholarship to one graduating senior from a public high school in each of the four counties represented by RC 10: Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Washington.  Applicants must complete an application that is then reviewed by a committee of RC 10 members

Over 90 RC 10 members and guests gathered for our Fall Luncheon and General Meeting on October 10, 2017. Our keynote speaker was Peter Savage, NYSUT Senior Legislative Representative, who spoke on the dangers of a State Constitutional Convention and the need to Vote No! on Referendum #1 which will be on the back of our voting ballot on November 7.

Regardless of what you may hear, Savage stated that our present State Constitution establishes all of the rights we enjoy as a state
