SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE REPORT

From July 2020 through February 2021, RC 10 members donated a total of $13,619 to the BackPack Program supporting over 40 schools and approximately 3,100 students. Thank you for your help. A donation of any amount is appreciated.

Looking forward to spring and summer, students will continue to need our help to ensure healthy food is available to them. Betsy Dickson, Director of Children’s Programs at the Regional Food Bank discusses the Regional Food Bank’s Summer BackPack Program below:

“As we start to look toward the end of the 2020-21 school year, the Food Bank is now planning our second summer of the broad-scale Summer BackPack program. Summer BackPack got its start last summer when our previous model feeding children during the summer at parks and community centers was no longer feasible. We knew we had to pivot to ensure hungry children were still getting the food they needed, in a time of crisis. We called on our school year partners and community groups to implement the model into the summer months. Throughout the summer of 2020 the Food Bank partnered with 46 communities to feed over 2,500 children.  The feedback about the summer program was overwhelmingly positive. Many partners from last year have committed to returning to the program this summer. We know the BackPack program is a commonsense model that works. We deliver food directly into the hands of hungry children. And now, summer break will not interrupt this critical work.”
