It is such a pretty thing, almost looks like a tree ornament. So small it cannot be seen with the human eye, yet Coronavirus has changed our world and our lives.

Schools, restaurants, theaters, and more are closed to the public. RC 10 has had to cancel social events, regional conference, and planned trips. Suddenly, nothing can be done "as usual." We have to, and will, create new ways to maintain our household, stay in touch, organize, help others, and ask for help.

As seniors, we all know that we are in the high-risk group likely to develop complications if we should

NOVEMBER 2020 by Jane Weihe

A couple of weeks ago we were enjoying a Zoom session on our back porch with some NYC friends when our carbon monoxide alarm went off. It was a warm and humid night. But this time was different.

Our kitchen and back of the house living area were closed off with the air conditioning on. The first reaction of all of us was that this was a malfunction of the alarm. In fact, my husband’s first response was to wave a dish towel at the alarm to turn it off. We had often done this to shut off the smoke detector when it had obviously been activated by a cooking adventure.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today warned retirees not to be fooled if they received text messages or other communications that purport to come from the state’s retirement fund and the Office of the State Comptroller, asking for a payment to “upgrade” the retirement fund. It’s a scam. Report the message to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or by calling the Albany FBI Field Office at 518-465-7551 or 1-800-CALLFBI.

From Your President:

We live in an ever-changing world and sometimes that reality comes at us in the most unexpected way. RC 10 is facing some radical changes in the way we serve our members. We have a limited range of options to respond to this situation. NYSUT supports our communications with members by publishing six newsletters a year for each RC. We may do fewer but not more. Every three years they mail one newsletter that includes an election notice for us as first-class mail, so that all voters have ample notice of elections.

NYSUT is finding it necessary, for economic reasons, to reduce

If you are like me, you felt a bit of alarm when you saw the recent screaming headlines in the corporate media that proclaimed, "Social Security is Going Broke!" The headlines came as a result of the annual report that was released by the Social Security Trustees. Contrary to the gloomy headlines, the report actually found that Social Security is fully funded until 2035, one year longer than the previously reported projection. Indeed, Social Security has a large surplus which is projected to be roughly $2.9 trillion next year. Social Security Works reports that
