What resources have you used to keep busy during the Pandemic? Are they available to the public? Please consider sharing some of those links and give us a category to list them under on our website so that we can share with other RC 10 members. It’s going to be a long winter.

Here is an example from history:

Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History offers two free programs. One is Book Breaks every Sunday. A book on History is the focus of the presentation and its author appears for a conversation and background on the subject matter. If you are interested

BY RUTH SHIPPEE, December 2020

This year has been challenging on so many levels. The holidays have been different than those in the past.

The events, conferences, and meetings that we as retirees have had previously also need to take a different look as we adapt to the current health concerns.

To that end, I am gathering ideas on what might be of interest to you as retirees to participate in to allow us to continue to interact, learn, and be entertained. Let me know your ideas of speakers, topics of interest to you, places you would like to do virtual tours of as a group, book club ideas

The US Constitution requires Congress to count every person living in the US every ten years, including residents, non-citizens, and children. Information from the Census is used to distribute more than $700 billion in federal funds for programs such as: Medicaid, Title I, school lunches, Special Education, housing assistance, and many others. In addition, New York’s Congressional districts, state Senate, and state Assembly districts will be redrawn in 2021, based on Census data. Experts project New York could lose one—possibly two—Congressional seats, and we could lose Electoral College

RC 10 is in need of a person to fill the very important position of Treasurer, as soon as possible. Perhaps you might be interested, or might know someone else who would be a perfect fit for this crucial office.

At the August Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved the following motion: In recognition of the time-consuming tasks performed by the Retiree Council 10 volunteer treasurer, Paula Johannessen moved that the Board of Directors provide an annual stipend of $6,000 to the treasurer. The treasurer will have the right of refusal. This motion should be reviewed annually.

No matter what your party affiliation or personal preference for a candidate might be, it will never be more important to vote in an election than the one coming up this November. In 2018, NY voters turned out at an all-time high for the 21st Century with only 49% of eligible voters casting a vote. Contrast that with a 75% turn-out high in 1974. In an effort to make sure everyone knows all their options and how to vote in this upcoming election, we are providing you with the resources below. Please share and consider either voting early in person or

NYSTRS continues to be one of the top-performing, most secure and well-funded public pension plans in the country with total year-end net assets of more than $122 billion and a 30-year rate of investment returns, net of fees, at 8.8%, according to the System’s 2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
